Why Rota works for a golf long stay

Most golfers who come to this stretch of the Cádiz coast for a month or more are not looking for a resort with a single course on the doorstep. They want a base where the golf is genuinely good, the cost per round is reasonable, the weather allows play most of the year, and daily life outside the course is not an afterthought. Rota delivers on all four better than the purpose-built alternatives along the coast, and it does so at a monthly price that is a fraction of what a comparable stay costs in the summer.

The area's main draw is Costa Ballena Golf Club a 10 min y Vista Hermosa Golf a 15 min. Because the layout is played as three interchangeable loops of nine, you are not repeating the same eighteen holes every day, which matters when you are staying for four weeks rather than four nights. Green fees in low season are meaningfully lower than in summer, and a monthly membership or ten-round book brings the cost per round down further. For UK golfers the practical questions are usually the same: how far is the airport, can I store my clubs safely, and will anyone answer the phone in English. Jerez is 35 minutes away, several of our homes have a garage or storage room for equipment, and we reply in English the same working day.

Honest caveat: December and January are the wettest months here and the wind can be strong. If guaranteed sunshine is a priority, target October–November or from mid-February. If low prices and empty courses matter more, the winter months are unbeatable.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a long-term golf rental in Rota cost, and what is included?

Long-stay rentals in Rota start at €1.150 per month in low season, which for us means October through March, with a usual minimum of 28 nights and a further reduction from the third month onwards. That figure is for the whole property up to its official capacity, not per person, and it covers fibre wifi, linen and towels, arrival and departure cleaning, and reasonable water and electricity use, capped at 300 kWh per month, which is comfortably above what a two-person long stay consumes. Not included: the refundable security deposit of €200 for apartments and €500 for villas with a pool, returned in full within seven days of check-out provided there is no damage; pool heating, an optional extra at €15 per day that only makes sense between November and March; and any consumption clearly above the agreed cap, which is billed at the actual utility rate with no mark-up. For stays beyond three months we offer a flat rate that you can confirm over WhatsApp, typically 10 to 15 percent below the standard monthly price. To put the numbers in context, two August fortnights in Rota come to roughly €2.800, while a full winter month costs less than half of that. That gap is exactly why so many guests who discover the area in summer end up coming back in January.

Where can I play golf near Rota, and how far is the course?

From our properties in Rota you have access to Costa Ballena Golf Club a 10 min y Vista Hermosa Golf a 15 min. The main course in the area is Costa Ballena Golf Club, a 27-hole layout designed by José María Olazábal, played as three interchangeable loops of nine, which lets you pick your route according to the wind, a genuine factor on this stretch of the Atlantic coast. It sits under ten minutes by car from most of our homes and has a clubhouse, restaurant, practice area and club rental, which is practical if you fly in and would rather not check your clubs. Fifteen to twenty minutes away you have alternatives such as Vista Hermosa, a slightly more technical and less crowded track, and if you want to widen the circuit there are courses around the Bay of Cádiz and towards Chiclana within an hour. For longer stays, the sensible move is a monthly membership or a ten-round book from the club rather than paying green fees individually, and we will tell you who to speak to and what the current rates are when you arrive, because they change with the season. We also tell you which days see the least pressure on the tee: midweek mornings move at a very comfortable pace.

I am a UK golfer: what do I need in order to book and travel?

The process is built so you can close it from the UK without making calls during Spanish office hours. Message us on WhatsApp at +34 644 840 212 or email info@vegahomevacacional.es and you will get a reply in English within the same working day. We need your full name, party size, approximate dates, and whether you are travelling with golf equipment, because several of our homes have a storage room or garage where clubs can be left securely. The booking is confirmed with a 30 percent deposit by bank transfer or card, with the remaining 70 percent paid on arrival; we do not ask for the full amount upfront the way the large platforms do. The nearest airport is Jerez de la Frontera, about 35 minutes by car, with direct seasonal flights from several UK airports; alternatives are Seville at just over an hour and Málaga at roughly two and a half hours. You can pick up a hire car at Jerez and be in Rota before your coffee goes cold. If you land late we arrange self check-in with a key safe at no extra charge, and a personal welcome is available if you prefer it. For stays of a month or more we can also send a short video walkthrough of the property before you book.

When is the best time for a long golf stay in Rota, and what is the weather like?

The window that best balances price, weather and tee-time availability runs from October to March, with two caveats worth knowing. October and November are excellent: the Atlantic is still warm, daytime temperatures sit between 18 and 24 degrees, the courses are in good condition after summer, and tourist occupancy drops sharply, so rounds are quick and rates are low. December and January are the coolest and wettest months on the Cádiz coast, with occasional strong wind; that is not the season for guaranteed sunshine, but it is the season for low prices and empty courses, and it pays to choose a property with proper heating and a southerly aspect. February and March improve noticeably as the days lengthen, and this is when many long-stay guests book the full block. April and May offer the best overall combination of temperature and price before the summer peak. What we do not recommend is July and August for long stays: prices multiply and the destination fills with families, which changes the rhythm of the area entirely. If your priority is playing a lot of golf at a good price, aim at November through March; if you want more reliable weather, target October or from mid-April onwards.

What is the difference between booking with you and booking through Airbnb or Booking.com for a long stay?

The main differences are price and contractual clarity. When you book a long stay on Airbnb or Booking.com, the platform charges the owner a commission which feeds into the rate you see, adds a guest service fee, and in many listings caps the maximum stay. Booking direct with us, the price is the same or lower because there is no intermediary, and we can sign a seasonal rental contract with the terms in writing: exact dates, monthly price, which utilities are included, what happens if you need to extend, and the deposit return procedure. That clarity matters enormously over two or three months, where one ambiguous clause about utilities can cost you more than the difference in rate. The second difference is who you talk to. If the dishwasher breaks in week four, with us you speak to the person who manages the property and you get a repair within 24 to 48 hours; with a platform you open a ticket and wait. The third is flexibility on arrival and departure dates, since we are not tied to a rigid Saturday-to-Saturday calendar when the property is free. The honest trade-off is that we do not have a large platform's buyer protection scheme, so we compensate with a contract, a documented deposit, and a physical office in Sanlúcar de Barrameda operating under tax ID 52315032Z, which you can verify.

Do the properties have wifi, and are they suitable for remote work over several months?

Yes, and it is a question we ask ourselves before assigning a property, because not all of them are equal. Most of our homes in Rota have fibre with real-world download speeds between 300 and 600 Mbps, enough for simultaneous video calls, large file uploads and streaming on several screens. What you should know is that wifi quality inside a house depends heavily on layout: in two-storey homes with thick walls, the router in the living room often reaches the upstairs bedroom poorly, so we have been installing repeaters or mesh systems in the properties where we found the problem. If remote work is critical, tell us when booking and we will confirm in writing which property has which setup, and we can even run a real speed test before you commit. Beyond wifi, consider two things for long stays: a desk with natural light, which not every propertyhas, and noise. In summer the area is lively; in winter it is very quiet, so for months of work winter is clearly the better choice. There is also an administrative point: if you will be working remotely from Spain for a foreign employer, it is worth reviewing your tax position with an adviser, since a stay beyond 183 days can have implications.

How do check-in, the security deposit and the end-of-stay refund work on a long rental?

For long stays we always do check-in in person where possible, because there is more to explain than on a one-week booking: where the meters are, how the heating works, which day the bins go out, and what should and should not be touched on the installation. If you arrive out of hours we prepare self check-in with a key safe and send you a short video with instructions. The deposit is paid before arrival: €200 for apartments and €500 for villas with a pool. We document it in writing with a receipt, never as cash without proof. At the end of the stay we carry out a joint inspection, or if you have already left, an inspection with dated photographs that we send you. The refund is made by transfer within a maximum of seven days and we only deduct what is justified with an invoice: a repair, exceptional cleaning if the property needs more hours than planned, or utility consumption clearly above the agreed cap. We do not charge for normal wear and tear, because normal wear and tear is part of living in a house. For stays of several months we also agree an optional mid-stay clean, which most guests take once a month at a fixed price agreed at the start and never changed afterwards.

Can I bring a pet, and what restrictions apply in Rota?

It depends on the property, and we would rather be clear before you book than afterwards. Around a third of our Rota portfolio accepts pets, usually small to medium dogs, and those properties carry a deep-cleaning supplement at the end of the stay of roughly €30 to €50 depending on the animal's size. Homes with a private pool and an enclosed garden are the most requested by guests travelling with a dog, and they are also the first to go in low season. What we do not accept under any circumstances is leaving the animal alone inside the property for long periods, for two concrete reasons: the noise disturbs neighbours, who in Rota are largely year-round residents, and the risk of damage multiplies. If you are staying long term and need to be out playing golf for several hours, there are dog boarding and walking services in the area that we can point you to. On the beach, be aware that outside high season some stretches allow dogs on a lead, but the municipal rules vary by council and by season, so we give you current information on arrival rather than a generic answer that may be out of date. If your dog is of a breed classified as potentially dangerous, we need the paperwork in order before confirming.

What is there near Rota for companions who do not play golf?

A great deal, which is one of the reasons the long-stay formula works so well: the golfer does not drag the family to a single-activity destination. In Rota you have the beaches, with fine sand and promenades for a daily walk. Sanlúcar de Barrameda is under half an hour away, with Bajo de Guía, its manzanilla bodegas and boat access into Doñana National Park, a full-day excursion worth booking ahead. Rota adds a historic centre, a market hall and an international community linked to the naval base that keeps restaurants open all year, which is unusual in this area in winter. Jerez is 35 minutes away with its sherry bodegas, the Alcázar, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and a serious tapas scene. Cádiz is about forty-five minutes and in low season it is a different city: no queues, winter light, and carnival as the big date if your stay falls in February. For daily life, Rota has supermarkets, a pharmacy and health centres close by, and public transport connects to Rota and Sanlúcar, though a car is practically essential to move freely around this region.

How do I book a long stay, and what happens if I need to change my dates?

Message us on WhatsApp at +34 644 840 212 with your approximate dates, how many people are travelling, whether you are bringing golf equipment or a pet, and the monthly budget you have in mind. We reply with two or three concrete options, real photos, layout and a cost estimate, and we tell you honestly if none of them fits what you are asking for. Once you choose, we hold the property with a 30 percent deposit and sign a seasonal contract with the terms in writing. On changing dates: for long stays we are fairly flexible if you give at least 30 days notice, because moving a whole month is workable when the property is not committed afterwards; what we cannot do is accept a date change with two days notice in the middle of August, and we would rather tell you that before you sign. On cancellation, the deposit is returned in full with more than 60 days notice, 50 percent between 60 and 30 days, and not at all within 30 days, unless we manage to re-let the period, in which case you get it back in full. All of this sits in the contract rather than in an ambiguous email, because on long stays the terms matter more than on a weekend break.

Are the properties accessible for people with reduced mobility?

We have to be honest: most of the Rota housing stock was not designed to strict accessibility standards, because it was built in developments from the 1990s and 2000s where the lift, when there is one, sometimes does not reach the garage and where bathrooms lack the turning circles current regulations require. That said, there is a group of properties that work reasonably well for reduced mobility, and we identify them by concrete criteria rather than vague claims: step-free access from the street, a lift to the property door, an entrance door at least 80 centimetres wide, a walk-in shower rather than a bathtub, and a bedroom and bathroom on the same level as the living room. If you tell us the specific needs, we send targeted photos of those elements and a video of the route from the street to the bedroom, which is the fastest way for you to judge whether it works for you. What we never do is promise generic accessibility and then let you arrive to find three steps at the entrance, because that ruins a holiday and creates a bigger problem than the lost booking. If none of our properties fits, we will say so and point you towards accommodation in the area that does.

What extra costs might appear on a one-month stay that are not in the price?

On a long stay you should know the extras before signing, and we would rather list them all than have you discover them mid-month. First, consumption above the cap: we include up to 300 kWh per month of electricity and reasonable water use; if you use a lot of electric heating in winter because the property has no other source, you may exceed that, and in that case it is billed at the real utility rate with no mark-up. Second, pool heating at €15 per day, entirely optional; without it the water is cold between November and March and goes unused. Third, the optional mid-stay clean, with the price fixed at the start. Fourth, the deposit, which is not a cost but a refundable sum. Fifth, parking in the properties where it is on an external concession, which applies to two specific homes and is always stated on the listing. We do not charge for linen and towel changes on long stays: we leave two sets per bed so you can manage it yourself, and if you need an extra set we bring it at no cost. We do not charge tourist tax, because Andalusia does not levy one as such, and we apply no service fee or card surcharge.
